5 Mistakes to Avoid When Starting an Online Business

Today on the podcast I'm sharing with you the good, the bad, and the ugly. Well, not really... but I am sharing with you the five most common mistakes people make when they start an online business.  Many of these mistakes I made myself.  They are the most common mistakes most entrepreneurs make when they start in the online space.

I want to keep you from making these same mistakes and that's why I'm sharing them with you today!

1. Falling into the trap of perfectionism

You must make things simple. Many people can fall into the trap of making things perfect.
It ends up taking them so much time to make things perfect that time goes by so fast. They end up spending 6 months to a year making things perfect and losing their motivation.

So what can you do?
Simplify things! You don't need fancy software and everything to be perfect.
Think about how much you learned between college versus on the job. You learned way more on the job, right?

2. Spending money on every little thing thinking you need every strategy out there

Many entrepreneurs get caught up in thinking they need every little thing--every course that is presented to them with a promise that it is THE strategy that they need. You can take a million courses and read a million books BUT if you don't actually take action what good are they?  Taking imperfect action will get you farther than any course will.

3. Trying to be everywhere

It's impossible for someone to show up on Instagram, Instagram stories, Facebook live, Facebook, Pinterest, Youtube, a blog, etc. without a team. Pick two places where you will be extremely consistent! Don't expand your reach until you master those two things. People that seem to be everywhere usually have a team.

4. Waiting until you have all the “official things” set up

Many people get caught up in the logistics of being official: LLC, bank accounts, etc.
This is something that teachers get caught up in. We are used to having to get a certification or license for everything we teach. So many start to believe they need an LLC, a business bank account, etc. in order to be successful.  I encourage you to start small. Yes, there is a time and place for those things.  They are important, but they are not important enough to stop you from starting to create an income.

5. Listening to everyone else’s opinions

Many think they understand how the online world works. Many people think they have used it most of their life so they know all about it.  However, unless they have created a successful online business, they really don't understand how online marketing works.  Many times they don't understand the possibilities online.
